NTT SV1 is a four story, 160 SF data center designed to achieve an Immediate Occupancy performance level resulting from a Design Basis Event (DBE) and a Damage Control performance level resulting from a Maximum Considered Event (MCE). The building utilizes a structural steel gravity system, a base isolated buckling restrained braced frame lateral system, and an auger cast pile foundation system.
The isolation system consists of (50) Triple Friction Pendulum (TFP) bearings in parallel with (25) Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVD’s) that are designed to accommodate 32” of horizontal displacement in each direction. The building’s buckling restrained braced frames are designed to provide enhanced ductility in the event of ground motions meeting or exceeding an MCE level event. The project site is in a high seismic region subject to a local “basin effect” which increases long period seismic demands. PARADIGM included FVD’s in the design in order to reduce the large building displacements to a level acceptable to both the client, design team, and local jurisdiction without sacrificing the projects stringent performance objectives.
