Genesis Marina

Location: Brisbane, CA

Partners: SOM, Webcor

Completion Date: 2024

Genesis Marina consists of two, 5-story and one, 6-story buildings supported by one continuous 2-story concrete parking structure. In total, the project consists of 730,700 SF across all of the structures. The 5-story and 6-story buildings all utilize a structural steel framing gravity system and a steel buckling restrained braced frame and steel moment frame “dual system” for lateral support. The braced frames are located at the interior core of the building in order to maximize the dramatic views of San Francisco Bay, Candlestick Point, and San Bruno Mountain while the moment frames assisted in controlling the torsional response of the building during a seismic event. The 2-story parking structure utilizes a cast-in-place concrete gravity system with cast-in-place concrete shear walls supporting loads from both the steel buildings and the concrete structure.

Genesis Marina is located in an area known as Sierra Point and was utilized as a refuse site from the 1960s until the 1980s. The subsurface conditions consist of bay mud below approximately 80 feet of refuse. When Sierra Point was closed as a refuse site, a clay cap was installed across the entire site. This particular site was the last area to be closed and as such, the refuse placed is relatively juvenile in its compression and settlement. Therefore, the structure, like all in the Sierra Point area, is supported by 1760, 190 foot long steel “H” piles which extend thru the clay cap, down thru the refuse and bay mud to bedrock.  The refuse decomposition also creates significant challenges related to site settlements which create unique support conditions for underground piping and conduit which are supported from the ground floor structural slab.
