Paradigm, RMW Architecture Team to Improve Major Bay Area Health Facility

Marin Health & Wellness Campus renovation increases safety and service to thousands of Marin County residents

SAN FRANCISCO (August 26, 2008)

Paradigm Structural Engineers, Inc.,(www.paradigmse.com), a leading national and international provider of structural design services, and RMW architecture & interiors (www.rmw.com), an award winning design firm will soon complete a $30 million renovation of the Marin Health and Wellness Campus, a major provider of public health services to residents of Marin County.

Phase One of the five-building, 74,000 gross sq. ft. facility was completed in May, and the final phase is scheduled for completion on October 1, 2008. The renovation included evaluating and retrofitting five of the wood frame and concrete buildings on the campus. The retrofits are designed to strengthen the buildings in the event of an earthquake, allowing for higher levels of safety and less building damage.

“Public healthcare is a key aspect of earthquake recovery,” said Kurt R. Lindorfer, S.E., founding principal of PARADIGM Structural Engineers, Inc. “The activity of an important regional facility such as the Marin Health and Wellness Campus cannot be interrupted following a major seismic event. We are proud to be able to work with RMW to increase both the safety and service effectiveness of this facility.”

The Marin Health and Wellness Campus houses the county’s public health clinic, the WIC program, and a number of adult and children’s mental health programs. The renovated facility also includes conference and training rooms for staff and client education. The center serves thousands of Marin County residents.

In addition to seismic evaluation and strengthening, major components of the project included master planning, a site plan and interior design. New interior build-outs were constructed to improve the flow of work among doctors and clinicians, as well as to increase client and doctor privacy without decreasing patient comfort or compromising utility.

The county selected RMW for the project in part because of the firm’s previous work on public facilities. “RMW is proud to support this public sector client with strong community focused social and sustainable goals,” says Joe Pirrone, AIA, senior project manager at RMW. “The Marin Health and Wellness Campus is a facility that will now provide better safety net services based on design and structural improvements.”
